Talented footballers across communities in the Emohua local government area, grouped into 14 football teams across the 14 political wards in the local government area, are in for another competition for a trophy in the 2nd edition of the Emohua local government soccer tournament tagged “WIKE PEACE CUP 2022.”
The Wike Peace Cup is an annual soccer tournament initiated and sponsored by the administration of Dr Chidi Lloyd as part of the activities lined up to celebrate the end of every year and the return of peace, unity, and progress in the Emohua local government area.
The 2022 edition of the soccer tournament, conceived to promote peace and unity amongst communities and youths across the local government area, commenced on Sunday with an opening ceremony and official kickoff held at Ojims College, Rumuji Town, in Emohua LGA, amid a large crowd of football lovers and youths across the LGA in attendance.
The official kick-off was performed by the chief of staff of the Rivers State government house, Chief Engr. Chukwuemeka Woke, on the invitation of the chief host and chairman of the Emohua local government area, Dr Chidi Lloyd, marking the commencement of the tournament, with the ward 6 (Ibaa) team, the defending champions of the tournament, and the ward 10 (Omudioga, Akpabu, and Itu) team playing the opening match of the group stage after the ceremony.
The opening match between Ward 6 and Ward 10 ended 3-1 in favour of the Ward 10 team against the defending champions.
The opening ceremony was also witnessed by the vice chairman of Emohua LGA, Hon. Edna Nyeche; the honourable commissioner of the Rivers State Ministry of Environment, Barr Emenike Geoffrey-Eke; a former commissioner in the Rivers State Assembly Service Commission, Hon. Arthur Uchendu; members of the Emohua Legislative Assembly; and members of the Local Government Management Committee, as well as principal officers and appointees of the council.
